Car will mis-fire on slight excelleration. Auto speed control- goes great-go up slight hill and will mis-fire. Gas milage is 25-28 mpg on highway. Go up hill, mis-fire. Replaced plugs when problem was very slight no help. Fuel injection cleaned three times (two before fuel pump, one attached to injector rails after fuel pump. Works for 1-2 tanks of gas and same thing (but not as bad as prior to injection cleaning). Fuel filter replaced also. Works better on plus or hi-test gas. Prior to mis-fires always ran on regular gas. Was going to replace autolite plat plugs with another kind but who knows. Another point, if I put in LARGE bottol of injector cleanor, car runs almost perfect till next tank full (sunoco).

Welcome to the forum Ken.
Let me start off by asking you a few questions. What body style Lincoln are we talking about? What size engine? Does the check engine light come on at any time while the engine is misfiring? If so have you had the trouble codes read? I ask this because if the misfire is severe enough the computer should have set a misfire code for the offending cylinder(s) which would make locating the problem much easier.
The ignition coils on these engines (3.0L, 3.9L, and 4.6L) have had a high failure rate. The coil windings can fail and the insulating boot between the coil itself and the spark plug also tend to develop pin holes which allow the spark to short to ground causing a misfire. This may or may not pertain to you situation but it is something to be aware of at any rate.
Give us a little more information on the vehicle and we’ll see if we can help you out.

What Venturi said. We maintain a large flaat of Ford products and the coil and boots are a vrey common failure. You can also pull one of the boots and squeeze the bottom aln look for hairline cracks that will allow spark to jump under load. Good luck and let us know.
