I have a 1991 Toyota Celica GT 2.0liter..146,000miles..i hit the gas one day at a stop sign and the car sputtered.brought it to my friends shop said it was the ignition coil $175 it stopped but that wasnt the problem although i guess that needed to bef ixed too. afew weeks later it's still doign it. randomnly not a lot...ill go to hit the gas and the car sputters like it's gona stall but doesnt..car has never stalled on me. i am thinking the fuel pump or filter possibly i've been told. i have no clue tho.
when it did occured so far: downhill at a stop sign, turning and going around someone in bumper bumper traffic, and once just at a flat surface i swerved around someone and it did it...so i have no clue. someone give me an idea please!!

Welcome to the forum mIkeyT.
There a quite a few things that could cause your problem. One of the first places to start is the ignition system. Have the spark plugs been inspected or replaced recently? How about the plug wires? This type of plug wire is notorious for developing pin holes in the plastic spark plug boot insulators which allows the spark to arc to ground causing a misfire. Normally if this is the case a very close inspection of the insulator will reveal a tiny hole with white flash-over marks around it. The dist. cap and rotor should also be check for any signs of carbon tracking or excessive corrosion.
If this is equipped with and air flow sensor mounted on top of the air cleaner make sure that the air duct boot from the air flow sensor to the intake manifold is properly attached and doesn’t have any splits or tears in it also.
Let us know what repairs or inspections have been done to the ignition system other than the coil and we’ll go from there.

spark plug wires were all replaced maybe 4 -5 months ago b/c of a previous problem i had when it rained and mostire car wouldnt start..ignition coil as you already know.and that's it, i think i do need a tune up and to replace the spark plugs but could that be the cause of this? i mean i hit the gas and it makes a noise kinda like it's gona stall out but doesn't. i tried to think of when it has happened and i listed them in the previous post. but someone said maybef uelpump/filter....but i dont think it's rain or moisture related ne more b/c it hasnt really happened hwen it was even moist out. so i am completely at a loss and i dont have much money to fix it lol college suks!

It would be a good idea to at least check the plugs for carbon tracking along the ceramic shell and carbon build-up on the electrodes.
Does this feel more like a misfire where one or two cylinders drop out on acceleration or more like a severe hesitation where the entire engine cuts out and then comes back?
How often does the problem occur?

ill have to have my buddy help me check the spark plugs i dotn kno much about it...but i dont kno if i'd be able to tell if cylinders were dropping out or the whole engine was cutting...i step on the gas, it goes but sounds like it's gona stall, it happens so quick i've never caught how high or low the rpm's were when it happened so i'm not sure. but if the whole engine were cutting wouldnt it be more likely to stall? it has never once stalled. i wana say that it's more like some cylinders arent giving power but i'm not positive. b/c it hesitates and has very little power but then kicks in and is fine the rest of the way.
the problem has only occured maybe 5 or 6 times max in the last few weeks,. prolly about 2-3 weeks.

A severe hesitation or cut out wouldn’t necessarily cause the engine stall. I’d say at this point the best place to start is with the plugs. Get them checked or replaced if you can afford it. Also inspect the plug wire boots like I mentioned before just to be sure.
I think the key here to finding your problem will be in determining whether you’re getting a misfire, a hesitation, a cutting out or what. Maybe if your friend could drive the car he might be able to help you classify exactly what the symptoms are. Provided the car acts up of course.
Let us know what you find when you check the plugs and feel free ask as many questions as you would like.
