I have a 97 Ford Mustang. It seems as if the radiator has been leaking for a couple of months now. I've tried to patch it up with those patchers that go into the coolant tube. Those only last for a little bit, but works to keep the engine from overheating. recently, I poured some coolant into the radiator and drove home. When I got home the engine gague was all the way past hot and I checked the radiator. The fluid had turned brown for some reason. Can you help?!

Coolant changing color suddenly usually is not a good sign. It could just be a chemical reaction with the stop leak you’ve been adding, but there is a good chance that a cylinder head gasket has failed. There is a test that can be performed on the cooling system to confirm whether there is combustion gases in the system. If there is then you’re going the have to find out where it’s getting in and that means disassembling the engine. Most repair shops have what they call a block test kit for checking this and it should only take a few minutes to confirm whether there is a problem or not. Regardless you are going to have to have this cooling system flushed and the rad properly repaired or replaced. Today’s cars are designed to run fairly hot as it is, and allowing anything that will reduce the rads efficiency could push the internal temperatures to a point that things will fail and fail very quickly. Dan.
