'99 taurus 3.0l pushrod motor. car has a whirring, grinding noise. sounds as if the front wheel bearings are gone. 1st gear you do not really hear anything 2nd gear you can hear it but its not very loud 3rd gear oh my god!! put the car in the air and checked all four wheel bearings and front c\v shafts,no trouble found. then i ran the car thru the gears with the wheels off the ground, it sounds the same as driving it. sound as though its coming from the tranmission. fluild is full not burnt, trans drives out fine no leaks. any one run across tis before?

By your description it sounds like your going to have to pull the transmission and do a little exploring to find out what bearing or planetary gear set is causing the noise. The sad part is that if you open up the trans you’re likely into a rebuild depending on how much metal filings you find in the pan. Dan.
