1987 Oldsmobile Firenza, 4-cylinder, had been running ok, suddenly with warm engine developed irregular loud banging, with severe loss of power, much worse when pressing on the gas. The problem lets up and returns. What could be going on?

Hello and welcome. We would love to help you out, but before we can give a fair assessment of your situation, we would like a bit more information. How many miles on the car. what type fuel system (TBI, carb'd, or PFI), type major maintenance, for example has the timing belt ever been changed, has the head gasket ever been replaced, etc....
Initially from what you described, I'd be willing to venture a guess at possibly a bad valve. You say the problem seems more appearant after the engine warms. And at times seems to go away. Plus loud banging, do you mean backfiring either out the exhaust or out the intake?
Please give us more info about your rnginer and I am sure I can help you better......IDOL
