I,m stuck on this one guys.
It’s a 91 Olds 98 3.8Lt, L code engine
When it gets cold out (didn’t go above –18c yesterday) this thing will not start.
Plug in the block heater and you wouldn’t know there was a problem.
Let it sit for more then 6 hours in the cold with out it plugged in and it will only crank, not even an attempt to fire.
We have done just about everything I can think of and this old school bugger is hiding its gremlin.
Here’s what I’ve done so far.
Complete tune up, plugs, wires and filters and so on.
Scan ECM no codes found.
All sensor readings look normal.
Block learn and integrator aprox 124 to 132. After closed Loop
ECT and MAT will read ambient temp.( frigging scanner doesn’t like the cold thou had to keep it inside my coat LOL)
Tested coil packs secondairy warm and cold about 14K ohms
Fuel pressure running is aprox 38 PSI. and will hold with engine off.
Prime cycle after sitting 10 hours 42 PSI
Injector resistance aprox 12 ohms across all cold.
Consistent injector pulse during cold cranking
Cleaned injectors and decarbonized engine
Spark will jump a 25Kv spark tester. A little on the yellow side but still jumps tester air gap.
Engine compression aprox 170 PIS across the board.
New battery 770 CCA
Cranking RPM aprox 375 to 400
I have this car here again (Towed in) and after sitting in the shop for about 20 minutes it fired up but very flooded
I’ve changed the coil pack due to the yellow cold spark and the engine oil you could smell the gas as it was draining.
It’s sitting outside now after a 20 Klm drive and I will try it tomorrow morning. It’s supposed to be –20c tonight.
What am I missing?
I’m about to give up if the coil pack doesn’t do it. The customer has been pretty understanding, but we’re both ready to burn this thing. We don’t have any history on this thing either other then he bought it from an estate sale with only has 65000 Klm on it and this is his first winter with the thing.
Like I said the car starts and runs fine above 0c or if he can plug in the block heater, but he can,t do that while at work.
Dan.
Up date on the Olds.
The coil pack did the trick!!!
After sitting for about a day and a half in –15degree weather, it only cranked for about 5 rev’s and fired up and not even the slightest misfire.
Gotta love what mother nature can do if she wants.
