94 Chevy Cavalier

My 1994 Cavalier 2.2L auto drives fine for 10 15 miles then when I was coming to a stop it shook bad and died. I could restart it, no problem, but as soon as I put it in gear, it would die. I had to rev it up in neutral, then slide it into drive and peel out. As long as I could keep the car going a certain speed it was OK. I stopped at my friends and let it cool down for awhile, then left and it was OK, until I almost got back home (taking the back roads-no freeway) then it died again. I have seen this post on other boards but no answers. It seems it is a common problem for this chey. Please help!!! Thanks

I am no expert, but I had a 92 cavalier. great car. And I had a similiar problem, and I tried a new fuel pump with no luck.
Ifinally took it to a co-worker of mine who is an instructor for GM> and he replaces the coil.I was unaware that the coil could still put out a zap to my fingers and not have enough to fire the engine.But that solved my trouble.
Yours seems like it could be one of many things, so Hope a more knowledgable person replies. too

Here is a possiblity...Have you tried to see if the fuel filter may be clogged? It is a fairly inexpensive part that wouldn't hurt to replace...and just may fix your problem. The car may be running when you are forcing the fuel throught the filter while driving, but when it is in idle, it may not be able to flow through it fast enough for it keep the engine running.

Another idea may be to get a fuel system flush...could possibly have rust particles in the lines also.

Just an idea, and my not be an actual fix, but it wouldn't hurt.

I'd start with the fuel filter also. If that doesn't solve it, then I'd replace the coil next. If that doesn't solve it then I'd be looking at the fuel injection system and the Idle Sensor..........idol
