I have a 1995 Mazda with a 1.6 liter, multi port fuel injected, double over head cam Eng. with PS,PB, AT, and AC. with about 144,000 miles on it.
When I attempt to start the motor I hold the key in the "start" position and the motor cranks but won't start., I then release the key for a second or two then re-attempt and the motor will start., but after the Eng. has run a little I can turn off ign. and if I don't wait more than a few seconds, the Eng.will restart on the first turn of the key. and also when I drive the Eng. RP M's will sometimes go to almost 0 but catch back up as I release the gas petal, when that happens If I try to hold the gas petal in a cruising speed position, the Eng. will surge back and forth sort of like playing with the gas petal,I have replaced the fuel filter and checked for water in the gas and have also ruled out the fuel pump relay.
I had started to remove the fuel tank to check for water and when I had just removed the mounting straps I discovered that there was a fuel tank drain plug so I drained the tank and then remounted the mounting straps and then poured the same gas back into the tank (gas was drained into a large glass container so I could tell if there was any water) and then restarted the Eng. and noticed that the Eng. started on the first turn of the key and although the Eng. hesitated a little on acceleration the RP M's stayed pretty smooth at cruising speed ,at least for now
