Hi Lawcat, From your description, sounds like your starter is letting you down. Even tho the starter is a newly replaced starter, this isn't a gaurantee that it'll hold up. But that being said, please humour me and answer a couple questions.
When you turn the key to the start position, do all the lights and gauges on the instrument panel go DIM? If they do go dim, this is an indication that the starter is drawing the power it needs from the battery, it just isn't turning Next, have you had your battery tested recently? Sometimes when we replace high load parts such as a starter, if the battery is old, or is getting weak a new starter will cause a waek battery to fail. You battery may still have 10-12 volts, but the amperage will be too low for the starter to function. Have the battery LOAD tested make sure it can provide all the cranking amps that are needed.
Finally, when you say awful clicking sound, how so......like a grinding, or a repetitive clicking, or just a click with each turn of the key?
lawcat if you can provide answers to these for us, we can help get you closer to a solution. But meanwhile, my initial assessment is a bad starter..........IDOL
