My car has started acting more strange than usual, and I need advise on how to proceed. I know it may be the computer being retarded, I'm just hoping for more confirmation before I take it to a mechanic.
Automatic, 4 cyl, 2.4L, 213K miles
The car runs great, but lately when I start it and begin driving the speedometer does not work. It will start working in about 5-10 minutes, but the time it does not, the transmission will not shift. Once the needle works, the car will shift. Now the PC in this car is retarded already, gauges work on and off, gas gauge never shows a full tank anymore, check engine light is on for no reason. I do have a slight oil leak caused by the sending unit, been trying to get under there to fix it myself.
The transmission does need servicing, but I think the latest problem is another computer issue...anyone have any thoughts on that?
The computer replacement is expensive, and I just need to know as much as I can going in so I don't feel like I am getting ripped off when I take it in for repair. I worked for a dis-honest mechanic when I was a kid, and have never fully trusted one since.

Get the code read for the check engine light. There are 2 speed sensors on the transaxle that can cause the problem you describe. Having the trouble code will shorten the hunt. Sorry about the delay in response, but I have been away for over a week.

Hi guys, just ol' idol coming off the sidelines to give my 2-cents. bearen, have your speed sensor (transducer) checked. I have had 3 same issues of these in the recently. All showed the same or similar symptom and each turned out to be the speed sensor. The sensor detects to speed of the transmission main shaft as it is drieven by the engine. The sensor then sends a signal to the computer which in turn manages tranny shifting. The sensor also runs the speedometer and the delay your seeing is because the sensor might be sending a false or no-signal to the speedometer. Not saying this is your issue, but it might help you to narrow down the problem. Let us know........IDOL02
