We recently hit a deer in our 2004 Cavalier (4 door, 2.2 litre 4 cyl automatic). There was some small damage to the driver-side fender/bumper/light. The hood was caved in, and the windshield shattered.
When repairing the area around the light, the bodyshop removed the battery, and part of the air-cleaner assembly, which is in that area.
When we received the vehicle back, we noticed a distinct sound of air rushing when we hit the gas. Later that day, the engine light came on.
The bodyshop took another look, disconnected the battery, but couldn't find anything - so they sent us to the mechanic. The bodyshop speculated that the impact to the hood had somehow damaged the air filter system, which is right in front of the engine. The engine light went off due to the battery being disconnected when they took a look.
The mechanic (GM) can't find anything -- they suggest that it's likely an insulation (firewall?)/sealing problem - which is odd, since the bodyshop didn't repair anything around the firewall. It also doesn't explain why the engine light came on.
Any thoughts?

When the check engine light comes on again, have the codes read and post the exact code number. That will give us a place to start.
