1989 GMC S15 Jimmy 4.3L
It will turn over, but it won't start up. I sprayed some starter fluid on there, saw the sparks working, and I'm pretty sure gas is getting to it.
Where do I start?

Starting fluid has no effect at all... It still just turns over but doesn't start.
New plugs, tested them and they spark.
Saw the injectors spraying.
The only think I can think of is compression and the timing chain. It felt like there was enough compression, but I don't have a gauge so I'm not sure. Is there anything I'm missing before I swap the timing mechanism?

Myjimmy If I read your complaint correctly, your jimmy won't start, but your getting fuel and spark. It's an 89 and your afraid it might be out of time. You can check the timing easily enough by setting your timing marks for cylinder #1 at TDC, and check to see if you piston is at top, your distributor is pointing at #1. If this all aligns then you shuold be good there. If you were to ask me to stop by your house and look at the vehicle to give an opinion one of the first things I'd check is your fusible link. In the GMC/GM vehicles especially the older versions this device tend to burn out. The link is a starter interupter type which means that as you crank the engine over you will get all indications that the engine should start but it just doesn't. Try to locate this device and replace it. I recommend getting a manual for your vehicle to help you locate it and learn how to test it. From what you describe it sounds to me like this device has failed. Let know what you find out......IDOL
