I am looking for some help on my daughters 1996 Cavalier Z22. She has a problem with the car stalling when the outside temerature gets hot. The car stalls, then immediately will restart. It did this last summer when it was hot outside, then nothing all winter. Now that the outside temperature is warmer it is stalling again. Anyone have a clue? We took it to a local mechanic and he found nothin'

It can be hard to say what is causing this without getting involved with the car first hand; have you had the car scanned? If by chance you do have someone scan the car get the calibration code from the tech that’s reading the scanner. I don’t mean trouble codes but Calibration code. (The only way to get the cal code is with a scanner.) A cal code is the program ID number that your PCM (computer) is running on. This problem you’re having maybe addressed with an updated program. 1996 was the first year GM went to a programmable PCM. Once you have the cal code go to this site tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web enter the VIN number of the car and if there is any updates, this will bring them all up. Look down the list to find your cal code; if it’s at the top of the list then you have the most resent program. If not at the top have a read through the updates and see if there is anything that may address your running issues. You can’t pick and choose which program you want; if you do have the PCM reprogrammed you’ll end up with the latest which will include all prior changes. There is two ways to have the PCM reprogrammed; one is to take the car in the other is to take just the PCM itself into a dealer or to someone that has the hardware/software to perform the update. More and more independents are getting the equipment to do this because we’re finding that some of the strange things happening with today’s cars are program issues. Dan.
