Hi guys, I am working on my son's car this time lol. It's a 1992 cavalier z24 with a 3.1 mpfi v6. It was acting like it had no power for the last few days, and when you started it, it reved at 2500 to 3000 rpm. Whenever you would let off gas at 35 mph or above it sputtered and died, and realy hard to restart.Well yesterday, he was driving at 45 mph and it sputtered and died then wouldn't start at all. I checked for spark, It has spark at plugs. Checked codes it reads a 45 [ rich fuel at o2 sensor] and thats all. I'm not sure what else it could be as the O2 sensor wouldn't make a no start? would it? I have been told that it isn't necessarily O2 sensor but that is what it is reading. If you have any suggestions or ideas I would realy appreciate the help thanks guys.

It would be very rare for an O2 sensor to cause a no start, but it’s electronics so lets not completely rule it out but lets put it to the side for now. With the car having spark the next thing to check would be fuel pressure witch should be around 30 pis during cranking. If you have fuel pressure then check for injector pulse, in other words is the computer firing the injectors. You’ll need a fuel pressure gauge for the pressure test and a noide light or powered test light to check injector pulse. Let us know what you find and we’ll go from there. Dan.

check the fuel pressure regulater. pull the vaccume line off at the regulater & smell the hose to see if you have a gas oder.

To rule out the O2 sensor, you can unplug it and see if symptoms improve. About the only way it would cause a no start is if it is shorted and taking most of the voltage from the ECM
