Hi Guys, I have posted here before about this darn car and you helped me alot then. I have The 88 buick century with 2.5 fi 4 cyl. Since the last time i was here it has ran great! ... til now.I had replaced the 1 coil pack and ignition module , crank sensor. All new parts.Yesterday I was doing some running, everything running good, when I stopped at the light, it died and wouldn't start again.I replaced ign. module again, still won't start. When you crank it over you can smell gas real strong. So I checked for spark at wires, getting spark there.I then removed spark plugs to see if they were fouled, and they are not even wet? They were burning good because they were real light brown [ I think thats what color is good] lol.So this is the point I am at and still no clue any help will be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance guys.

This does sound strange you have spark, a strong smell of fuel but dry plugs. Maybe start with the basics of a compression test to confirm that the engine is still mechanically sound Dan.

Hi Dan I found out where my gas smell is coming from. It's leaking at base of fuel injection unit on top of intake. If it's leaking there would the engine not run? Also could that mean there is other not visible problems? i noticed that when I try to start after it sits for a long time it makes a pop just once then just cranks and not start. Don't know wether this means anything or not, I haven't got to compression test it yet will let you know what I find Thanks again.

If what I’m thinking is leaking the pressure regulator or a stuck open injector, then yes that is probably the cause of the no start, it doesn’t explain why the plugs are dry but who knows. With the age of this car I would go to the auto wreckers and get a complete throttle body unit and replace yours. Before you do that though try and disconnect the wiring harness at the injector that’s just to make sure that the injector isn’t being commanded on because of some form of short in the electrical system. Without seeing what is happening this is just a guess. Dan.

Hi Dan I search the salvage yards all over indy and no 1 has one, just my luck, lol. Are there any other tb's that are compatible? If not this car will be joining the others in the junk yard as I'm not spending the $400 that they want for a rebuilt 1 lol Thanks again.

Here’s an exploded view of what I’m hoping is your TBI unit, their not all that complicated and I’m pretty sure you can purchase most of the soft parts (diaphragm, gaskets & seals) separately. You may find that there is a rebuild kit available, ask at the local parts stores. Take it apart what have you got to loose but before you do try and confirm exactly where the fuel leak is originating from. All you may need to do is replace the fuel pressure regulator’s diaphragm Like I said what do you have to loose, if you’re thinking of trashing the car anyway. Dan.

Hi Dan Thanks for the diagram as this is very helpful.I didn't have a clue where to start on rebuilding it .As I said before I'm oldschool mechanic lol give me a carb and distributor I'll make it go.This dosen't look as complicated as a Holley 4 barrel, so I might be able to handle it lol. Thanks again.
