Back again with the continuing saga af my 99 Cavalier. Seems my horn is now intermittant and will work as the steering is rotated. When no horn, no relay is heard working. Definitely rotation of the steering has an effect on the intermittancy. Raising and lowering the column has no effect. I am sure my first dash teardown probably caused this.
Also, any thoughts how to check and confirm headlight alignment?
Any suggestion where to look without tearing out the dash (again) is appreciated.
Thanks again!

The connection for the horn is spring loaded and must tolerate the rotation. Connection can get dirty or worn. WARNING you should have an air bag in there and be wicked careful or send it out. Those can kill you or rendered inoperative if things get screwed up. - T

I wouldn’t be so sure it’s your fault unless you had the steering wheel off. You’re into what every mechanic has run into that a customer never believes it’s called a COINCIDENCE. With you saying it’ll work by rotating the wheel the problem is likely the horn brush or the slip ring that the brush rubs against is not making a good connection. It may even be the spring that holds the brush up tight to the slip ring has broken which will mean changing the multifunction switch. Regardless you’re going to have to remove the steering wheel to find out what it is, that also means dealing with the airbag. Airbags are a dangerous thing to fool with and you have to know how to disarm the system and to ground yourself to the chaise or you have a good chance of lighting it off. An airbag comes out with about a 600lb punch and it’ll give more then just a black eye if it hits you, broken bones comes to mind. If that hasn’t scared you away from tackling this I’ll try and explain how to disarm the system but I will not take responsibility if you end up looking like a retired prizefighter for the rest of your life. Dan.

I haven’t had one apart in a while but I don’t think they use the clock spring for the horn circuit. The wiring diagram for the horn still shows it as a brush. Dan.

Like I said I haven’t had one apart for sometime now and this diagram is right out of a GM manual but it wouldn’t be the first time GM has printed the wrong info. When I looked up an air bag diagram it showed the clock spring with no indication of the horn going through it. Dan. Sorry for the size and the quality but these diagrams don’t like doing the copy and paste thingy. LOL

Back to the orig post - aimining headlights.......
Aim the car at a garage door if you can on level ground and have a buddy block them one at a time so you get them where they should be. Good luck with the horn and stay safe with that. - T

Hi.
I got the Haynes manual for this and its pretty useless for this activity. After they give a diagnosis flow they state replace horn switch. How do you get at the switch? They dont say. Gives steps on disarming the airbag, but it seems plausable that you remove the cover of the steering wheel. How, without damaging things?

Re the lights, where should they be and which light do I use as a reference? What if they are both out of alignment? The useless Haynes manual shows how to setup at 25ft but gives NO other dimension about height from ground. One light seems higher, the passenger side. So does this mean passenger side is high or low or the drivers side vers vica (thats vice versa vice versa) :-)
