Chev Suburban 1997 1500 Series 5.7 l V8 Auto
My flasher relay just starts clicking for no reason. It can stay on for a few minutes or an hour or more. The signal lights, 4 way flashers or brakes are not activated. When the flasher is clicking no outside lights are on or any of the dash lights. I have replaced the flasher thinking it was defective, this didn't change anything. There is no problems with the lights when I turn on the signal lights, brakes or 4 way flasher.
I am not sure where to start.
Thanks

Hi newdock, That is a strange problem, the only thing I can think of at the moment is a possible problem with the multi-function switch such as a poor ground. Maybe one of the other guys has an idea.

I agree with you Venturi. Just looking at a wiring diagram and without doing a few pin checks I’m thinking it's likely the signal switch as well. It may have an intermittent internal short that is supplying a power feed to the turn/hazard flasher relay causing to click. The lights are not flashing because the switch is still in the neutral position and the circuits to the actual lights are still open. I would post the diagram but it’s kind of a low quality one and I would have to leave it so large, that my image host won’t allow it to up load. The next time it starts doing its thing, try gently moving the signal lever or the hazard switch button and see if the flasher stops clicking. If all else fails try giving the column a good solid smack with your hand near the multi switch area, that’s to simulate road shock. You know the old adage get a bigger hammer. LOL Dan.

If the truck has a tilt column, I'd take a close look at where the switch wiring passes through the lower column shield. This is a problem area (elec shorts) and I repair many of them.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will give them a try. I've tried moving the signal light lever and 4 way flasher switch in the past without much luck. I hadn't thought about the tilt column.
Thanks
