Hi, ya'll. This is my first post so please be patient.
Although it might be unnecessary to give my vehicle's specs to answer my question, I'll do it anyway because, well, what do I know?
I'm doing as much of the repair work as possible on my 1984 Chevy Suburban 3.5L small block, of course, 4-barrell carburetor, Engine Code L, auto transmission, two-wheel drive 1/2 ton. (I bought it in January 2005.)
I'm replacing my catalytic converter with the no-weld technique. So I'm using my Sawzall with metal blade to cut the old one out, after which I'll do my best to remove the remaining burrs and smooth out the exhaust pipe to make the installation of the new universal cat converter as easy as possible.
I need two exhaust pipe reducing couplings that measure 2 ½” at one end and are large enough on the other end to fit over a 2 ½” exhaust pipe. Using the Internet, I can't seem to find anything meeting this need. I suspect I'm using the wrong words or search terms. And before I get on the telephone and try to explain to the folks at all the nearby parts stores what I'm looking for -- which may not even exist in this or any parallel universe -- or go driving all over the place to see for myself, I wanted to ask ya'll.
Here's what I've done so far. I inserted two 4 ½" pieces of 2 ½" OD exhaust pipe into both ends of my Walker universal catalytic converter. I secured the two pipes inside the converter using two 2 ½" heavy duty muffler clamps.
What I really need is for one end of each pipe to be larger so that the existing exhaust pipe can be fit inside the short pipes I bought. I may have to pay some muffler guy to expand one end so that the existing exhaust pipe will fit inside. But since that sounds expensive, what I'd like to find is a couple of pieces of pipe that are 2 1/2 " OD on one end and big enough on the other end to fit over a 2 1/2" pipe on the other end. Where would I get such a pipe?
Thanks in advance.
