I have a 2000 beetle with AEG engine, 5spd, a/c, 89K miles. Have recently done a valve job after timing belt jumped and piston kissed 4 valves. after engine reassembly it starts and runs perfectly at idle but dies upon acceleration. scanner shows no codes. Oddly enough, if I disconnect the MAF sensor and remove the air intake tube from th air cleaner it runs much better but will not idle. I have also replaced the cat conv. thinking it may be clogged, to no avail. voltage and ohm tests on other components such as engine speed sensor, camshaft pos. sensor, ecm signal output etc. can find no other failures. does anyone have any ideas or should I just find a reliable arsonist! any help will be appreciated

I’m not to familiar with VW but the one thing that comes to mind is that perhaps you do not have the valve timing set properly, maybe a tooth retarded? It would be worth a look anyway. Dan

Thanks Dan, I thought I had it right but I'll double check it tonite! Do you know if moving a tooth forward is advancing or retarding? appreciate the drawings, they're better than mine.

I guess it depends on rotation but I think in your case clock wise would be advanced.

I've tried moving a tooth in both directions, no good. All 3 marks are now aligned at tdc. What is wierd is that I have an excellent idle but when it hits 2200 rpm it starts breaking down and acts like its getting no fuel. ( I just replaced the fuel filter and also tested fuel pump pressure- 60lbs) I have scanned it both at idle and when its breaking down at 2200 and it shows no codes. If the coil were faulty wouldn't it show a 300 -304 code? is there a possibility that an exhaust obstruction could happen behind the convertor? As before, if I disconnect the MAF sensor it will rev to 5K but I have no idle.

Hey Dan, Venturi, or anyone else, I may have stumbled upon the problem, just for the heck of it I pinced off all the vacuum lines to see if there was a difference. Inadvertently I also pinched off the fuel galley return line and lo and behold it runs 100% better. Does this point to fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, or something else? Thanx.

Hi marty, Is this engine equipped with an electronic throttle control? If so was the throttle control module “Matched” (synchronized) to the engine control module by reprogramming after the battery was reconnected?

I don't think it has elec throttle ctrl. it's a 2.0 and the cable goes directly from the floor to a bell crank aside the throttle body /plate frame. there is a sensor there but I believe it,s a throttle position sensor. The idea of just leaving the vice grips on the fuel galley return line is getting very attractive as it's now running great.

If you have to increase the fuel pressure to get the engine to run correctly, you have fuel starvation for some reason weather it is from vacuum leaks, un-metered air or a fuel control problem. Do you have access to a true scan tool which will allow you to view the fuel trims?
