OK I have had some serious work done on this car since buying it 2 months ago. when i bought it from the guy i immediately got a smog check and registered it the same day. On the way home from the DMV my check engine light came on. It was bank 1 O2 sensor something or another. So i took it to the automotive shop that does all the work on our company vehicles. They said my intake manifold gasket needed replacing cuz it was sucking in air. They said i needed all new engine mounts. So i got all the work done. No more check engine light. Then my car began to overheat about 3/4 of the way up on the temp guage. so they said my fans werent working, so i bought new ones. Still overheating, so next they said it was my coolant temp. sensors so got them replaced and still overheating. They put the wrong coolant temp sensors in my car so upon replacement the temp stays just a hair below the halfway mark on the temp. guage. Well I've had the coolant odor present under my hood the whole time. So they told me i needed a new radiator so i replaced it, still have the odor. They pressure tested the cooling system and it holds pressure. They pressure tested my head gasket and it holds pressure. I have personally steam cleaned the engine at least 4 time just to see if there was anything that hadnt burnt off. Yet i still have the coolant smell. I have no noticable coolant loss, no leaks on the ground or in the car. The car seems to operate fine and holds the temp and just below halfway. I even had the two large radiator hoses replaced. I had my valve cover gasket replaced, new plugs and wires. Heat and air work properly. I forgot to mention I had the thermostat replaced too cuz they said that was part of the problem too. So im out thousands of dollars in repairs on this car and still have this coolant smell under my hood and im sure that isnt normal. I have no smoke out of my exhaust and ive bent down and smelled the exhaust out of the muffler and no coolant smell there. Not sure how accurate this statement is but im pretty sure it smelled of coolant on my air filter and the air intake tube. but that couldve just been since i was sniffing around forever. The radiator cap has been replaced about 3 times now cuz the the 2 little black discs that are on the end of the cap either break away or melt away, not sure why they are the correct 13lb caps. the new one on there now has the little black discs already warping. the coolant reservoir level rises and falls while the car is running. Its below the full line when cold and as the car is ran and gets hot it slowly rises up past the full and then it drops down pretty quickly. but the smell doesnt seem to be coming from the reservoir. its embarrassing when people can smell your car anywhere you park or stop at a light. What could possibly be causing this coolant smell?
