Had a good one in here this morning, if you can call chasing down engine noises good. This 97 Taurus 3.lt came in with the customer’s complaint of a noisy belt. I drove the car in the shop and sitting in the driver seat I would of bet money that it was a belt as well. Open the hood and the noise is coming from the opposite end by the bell housing. With a little more checking I found the noise was coming from around the camshaft sensor. You could give the cam sensors wiring harness a pull and the noise would go away. Ok no big deal that little magnet must be broken like a lot of them do and is hitting the shutter ring. Order a new sensor and start to remove the old one, I get it off and there are no rub marks on it or the shutter. I ended up pulling the synchronizer and you could feel the drag on the shaft as you spun it. Disassembled the synchronizer and the upper bushing was chewed to almost nothing. As if it was not getting any oil, but you could see that it was. It’s the first one that I’ve came across and thought I’d share. Must be common thou the dealer have ten of the synchronizers in stock. Part # on the invoice DA-2094 and it cost about $145. Canadian. So what's that about $75. US. LOL Dan.

We have run into a few of those Dan. Never think about them till I hear the noise or someone mentions it. The good thing about them is once you find one, you don't forget about it the next time.

I’ve run across this once or twice myself, the last one was on an Exploder. They will make a hellova noise sometimes.

I know this is an old thread but do you happen to have a photo of the synchronizer as to where it is located? I just figured since I have a 99 Taurus I may need the info sometime ;D.

Don’t have a decent photo but the cam sensor is located where the distributor would be if it had one. This may help- Cam Sensor
