Hey guys I have seen this a few times now and thought I would show you what the fix is, Tom you've probably seen this a lot.
1995 Crown Vic, 4.6Lt, W code engine, 141346Klm on the odometer
Customer complaint was check engine light on, no running problems except for a slight engine ping at highway speed on light acceleration.
The only other thing the customer mentioned was that the car in the last year or so started to use a bit of oil. 1 to 2Lt between his 5000 Klm oil changes.
Scanned the Computer and found.
P0401 EGR Insufficient flow
P1408 EGR Flow out of range.
Did all the normal test as in making sure that the computer had control of the EGR and that the EGR actually was being opened during a key on engine running test. It all checked out ok.
Applied vacuum to the EGR at idle, the valve opened but no change in idle what so ever.
Removed the throttle plates and the throttle plate adapter housing, (it's that 90 degree elbow that bolts to the rear of the intake) quite apiece of plumbing on fords part. LOL
This is what we found, the EGR passageway was completely plugged with carbon.
The carbon was as hard as cement, had to chisel it out and soak with intake cleaner.
This is after and hours worth of the cleaning.
Reassembled everything, ran another engine running test, codes did not return and the engine ping was also gone during our road test.
Customer was happy it only cost him about $250, Until I told him that it was likely to plug up again, due to the oil burning. If he wanted to attack that next we would have to do his valve seals. He left after I told him how much labour the flat rate book gave us to do the job, saying he'd be back to have the EGR cleaned out again. LOL
